THE LINE IS A CURVE

Inspired by Kae Tempest, Jits Van Damme presents a solo performance about staying on course in a world that remains turbulent like a constant storm. In a costume that restricts her movement, she dances in the acoustics of a church, where every step and breath reverberates.

Saxophonist-composer Dima Neyens provided the complete musical arrangement with five original compositions: from intimate keystrokes and breath textures to broadly swaying melodic lines that guide the dramaturgy. Production courtesy of hetpaleis (Antwerp) and OPEK (Leuven).

I worked with Dima Neyens, a young musician with a passion for saxophone music.
From the very beginning, I knew I wanted to dance to saxophone music. I find jazz music incredibly interesting for creating movement material, because I like to be guided by the color and atmosphere of the music.

Through word of mouth, I got Dima's contact information. I was told he's a creative all-rounder, someone who likes to think outside the box when it comes to saxophone playing—exactly what I needed. I was looking for someone who wanted to brainstorm with me about all the possibilities with the sax and how we could experiment together and create unique things.

We started with a first rehearsal where we just jammed for two hours, without any agreements or a fixed structure: Dima on sax, me on dance. We intuitively followed what felt right. From that improvisation, ideas emerged that I later developed further. The original plan was to perform together on stage, but as the creative process progressed, I realized the performance had a very intimate feel. Recorded sax music proved to be a better fit for the atmosphere I was looking for.

In the weeks that followed, we bounced ideas back and forth: I shared my concepts and images, and Dima translated them into musical phrases. This ultimately resulted in four unique pieces of saxophone music that I'll use in my performance, the result of an inspiring collaboration.
